The former Essendon High School – the current Essendon Keilor College senior campus – is of historical, architectural, and aesthetic importance to the State of Victoria. It was the first suburban State high school in metropolitan Melbourne and set precednece for those to follow. This project danced between history and the future, uncovering 100 years of history through the demolition phase, the restoration of press metal ceilings, ornate plaster works and creating a state of the art of performing arts centre.

Our project team knew that the Essendon East Keilor Secondary College would be a highly technical build. Construction took place whilst the school remained operational as the project comprised of two sections; the refurbishment and restoration of the existing school hall and the new two level extension building, including a lift. Incredibly important to this new facility, was the inclusion of a disability access to provide accessibility and inclusion to all students.
The performing arts centre at Essendon Keilor College has been a launching pad for many students to follow their dreams to the highly esteemed Victorian College of the Arts and NIDA. Bowden Corp is proud to partner with the Department of Education and Training to play a role in helping students fulfil their performing arts goals into the future.
